Choosing The Color Of Your New Kitchen Cabinets: 2010 Trends

By: Art Gib

If you are building a new home, you know that the kitchen is the heart of any house. And by virtue of their size, nothing commands more attention in the kitchen than the cabinets. Other than durability of the product, consumers worry most about which color to choose. Here is an overview about the trends in kitchen cabinetry for 2010.

Darker and Richer

It wasn't too long ago that homeowners were choosing light maple and whitewashed finishes in droves. About five years ago, that trend started to reverse big time. Today, decorators are reporting more demand for painted cabinetry that is darker and richer in color. Black is definitely hot right now, especially when it is distressed along the edges for a softer, more natural look. Very modern homes go for a high gloss, shiny finish.

Other dark paint colors showing up in kitchen across America are deep blue, rich chocolate browns and smoky reds. Those who prefer dark colors are using their kitchen cabinetry to complement the rest of their decorating scheme: the kitchen cabinets are likely to match their furniture finish or their favorite home accessories' color.

Some Still Go Light

For those who still prefer a lighter, less formal look in their kitchens, the trend for paint color is away from bright white and towards a softer more muted palette. Look for light sage greens and yellows, as well as various shades of eggshell or ecru. Distressed edges look as beautiful on light paints as they do on darker ones, will help your cabinets look more natural, and built-in "flaws" help your cabinets stay looking newer longer.

Wood is King

Despite the huge increase in painted cabinets, the majority of Americans still favor the natural look of stained woods. Oak and whitewashed maple are out, but medium-toned woods such as alder and natural maple are the hottest trends. For those who like the richness of dark woods, mahogany has been enjoying a resurgence and will continue to do so. Cabinets made with horizontal-grained woods will also keep growing in popularity.

The Bottom Line

Notwithstanding trends, the only opinion that matters is YOURS! You need to choose a style and colors that are comfortable that you will love to look at for years to come. No matter what they look like on the outside, remember that it's also what's inside the cabinets that counts. Go for plenty of storage and functional drawer inserts: after all, trends may come and go, but convenience and usability never go out of style.
